Pressed Glass
Reproductions of pressed glass pieces are easy to recognize if
you do a little research.  Think of reproduction goblets as
apples.  There are many types of apples and if you take the
time to look at them and taste them you can always tell the
difference between the varieties.  The same truth holds in
pressed glass.  The ROM has made the Rayed Heart Goblet
available to the public at a price of $33.00, yet the original is
closer to the thousand dollar range, if you can locate one.  The
difference is the logo on the base of the goblet.  I once saw one
for sale for $1250, until I suggested that perhaps they look at
the mark on the base of the goblet.  This goblet is an easy one
to avoid buying a reproduction.

Reproductions of the Ostrich Looking at the moon goblet have to be
one of the worse reproductions I have seen.  The original Ostrich
Looking at the Moon goblets are so whimsical and the detail is so
interesting.  The reproduction goblets are so noticeable .  The
reproductions have a very flat base on the underside of the foot.
They also have the Ostrich basically looking as if it was glued on the
side of the goblet, as it is so large and odd looking.  This is one that
is easy to distinguish between the old and the new,
The Two Panel Goblet is also an easy one to distinguish
between the old and the reproduction.  Just look on the
stem of the goblet, if it has a ring on the upper part of the
stem it is an old one.  The new ones lack this ring on the
stem.  A minor detail that they seemed to have overlooked,
but this tells the old from the new.
The original Cardinal Goblet is a very attractive and
inexpensive goblet compared to most other bird goblets.
The new goblet is marked on the base of the goblet with a
"M" or "W".  Mosser and Westmorland  reproduced this
goblet as they thought it was a nice pattern but did not try
to deceive anyone.  They clearly mark all their pieces.
Deer & Pinetree Reproductions lack the fine detail of the
original pieces.  Old pieces have great detail. Just have a
look at the vine growing up the tree.  The new ones lack any
imagination that it is a vine growing up the tree, rather looks
more like a rope.

Wedding Ring Goblets have a rayed foot on the new version.
The old ones have  a plain foot. ( This is a LG Wright
reproduction)
Not all goblets with company marks cause it to be a
reproduction.  You just have to do a little more research.
The Heisey Glass Company has always marked certain
patterns with their "H" inside a diamond.
The Higbee Glass Co. has also marked the majority of
their pieces with a bee with H, I & G inside the wings and
body of the bee.  The Higbee Glass Co mark of this bee
has been reproduced with the reproductions lacking any
detail in the bee.  It looks more like a fat blob then an
actual bee.  The glass on the newer pieces tends to be a
little thicker and tinted a little greenish too.
The Cupid and Psyche pattern has been said to be made at an
American factory however I have seen a piece of Cupid and
Psyche with the English Sowerby mark on it
Buy from someone that has been in the business for a long time,
that passes out business cards and will mark on the receipt what
the item is and how old it is.  Trust your instinct, you can always
return to inspect the item after you do a  little research.
